Anne-Marie apologises for Ant & Dec's 'offensive' costumes on Saturday Night Takeaway

She performed in the End of the Show Show

Published 2nd Mar 2020

Anne-Marie has apologised for costumes worn by Ant & Dec in a performance on their show Saturday Night Takeaway this weekend. The singer took to the stage as part of the End of the Show Show to perform her song 'Ciao Adios', with the two presenters getting involved with some choreography.

The performance had a karate theme, as Anne-Marie is a triple world champion and a black belt in the Shotokan style - but viewers were left upset as Ant & Dec's costumes featured the 'Rising Sun' symbol, which was worn by the Japanese army during World War Two.

The singer has now taken to Twitter to apologise for the costumes, writing, 'I sincerely apologise to all those who were affected and hurt by my appearance last night on a UK TV. I want you to know that I had nothing to do with the costumes on this sketch.

'Unfortunately, education on this part of the history wasn't done and I am also hurt by the pain this signifies for so many people. I'm truly sorry and I promise you that this will not happen again. Our team is talking to the TV station, working on taking down the footage so that it does not cause any more pain.'

An ITV spokesperson also issued an apology, "We apologise for any offence caused during the End of the Show Show by the costumes worn. This was clearly unintended and we have taken steps to re-edit that part of the episode for the Hub and for repeat broadcasts."
